The same village. The same idea.

Rockville Centre has been protected by its own residents since 1875. The department is entirely volunteer — seven fire companies answering alarms in the village their members live in.

Live Oak Engine Co. #1 appears on the arch in this photograph. It is one of those seven today. The apparatus has changed a great deal; the people answering the call are still local.

Fire Prevention & Safety

Before you need us.

Most of what keeps a household safe happens long before anyone calls 911.

More on fire safety

01

Smoke alarms

Have working smoke alarms on every level of the home and in and around sleeping areas. Test them regularly and replace alarms according to the manufacturer's instructions.

02

A way out

Two ways out of every room, and one place to meet outside. Practise it with everyone in the house, including once in the dark.

03

The kitchen

Stay with the pan when the heat is on, keep anything that can burn away from the stove, and keep a lid within reach. If a pan catches fire, cover it and turn off the heat — don't move it.
