Fire Police Squad
Working at the perimeter of an emergency scene, the Rockville Centre Fire Police Squad helps protect the public, maintain access for emergency apparatus and support safe fire department operations.
Intro
The Rockville Centre Fire Police Squad is a specialized unit of the Rockville Centre Fire Department whose members serve an important role at emergency scenes throughout the village.
Working alongside the Department’s firefighters and Chief Officers, Fire Police members help manage the area surrounding an incident so emergency personnel and apparatus can operate safely and effectively. Their responsibilities range from controlling traffic and keeping roadways clear to managing bystanders and helping secure the working area.
The Squad has its own officers, vehicle and equipment, but its membership is drawn from members of Rockville Centre’s seven fire companies. This structure brings members from across the Department together for a specialized role supporting RVCFD operations.
Supporting the Emergency Scene
Traffic & Roadway Control
Fire Police members help control traffic around emergency incidents, close or restrict roadways when necessary, and help keep routes clear for responding emergency vehicles.
Public & Bystander Safety
By helping manage civilians and bystanders around an emergency scene, Fire Police members help maintain separation between the public and areas where firefighters and emergency personnel are operating
Scene & Apparatus Access
Fire Police help secure the fire line and working area while maintaining access for fire apparatus and other emergency vehicles arriving at or operating on the scene.
Part of the Department
Fire Police is an integral part of RVCFD, but it is not a separate fire company. Its members come from Rockville Centre’s seven fire companies and take on Fire Police responsibilities in addition to their membership within those companies.
Because of that structure, membership in the Fire Police Squad does not begin with a separate application to Fire Police. Members first belong to one of [RVCFD’s seven fire companies] and may then become part of the Squad.
That connection allows Fire Police to bring together members from across the Department with a shared responsibility: helping maintain a safer, more controlled environment so firefighters, apparatus and other emergency personnel can do their jobs.
