For 150 years, the Rockville Centre Fire Department has been built on a simple commitment: neighbors answering the call to protect neighbors.
Founded in 1875, RVCFD began at a time when Rockville Centre was still a small but growing community. Faced with the need for local fire protection, residents came together to organize what would become the village’s volunteer fire service. That decision began a tradition that has continued through generations.
Today, the Rockville Centre Fire Department remains a 100% volunteer organization. More than 350 members serve across seven fire companies, giving their time to train, respond to emergencies and protect the community they call home.
Much has changed since those first volunteers organized in 1875. The equipment, apparatus, training and challenges facing the fire service have evolved dramatically. What has remained constant is the willingness of Rockville Centre residents to step forward and serve.
Throughout its history, RVCFD has grown alongside the village. Generations of members have responded to fires, emergencies and countless calls for assistance while also becoming an important part of the community itself. The Department’s history is carried not only through its apparatus and firehouses, but through the members and families who have dedicated years—and in many cases generations—to volunteer service.
RVCFD today includes seven fire companies working together as one department, supported by the Fire Police Squad and the Rockville Centre Junior Fire Department. The Department also works closely with neighboring fire departments through the mutual aid system, continuing a fire service tradition of communities helping one another when additional resources are needed.
The 150th anniversary is an opportunity to recognize those who built the Department, those who carried it forward and the volunteers who continue that work today.
It is also a reminder that the history of the Rockville Centre Fire Department is still being written.
As RVCFD begins its next chapter, the mission remains rooted in the same spirit of service that brought Rockville Centre’s first volunteers together in 1875: protecting our neighbors, serving our community and being ready when the call comes.
